Winter Safety at Work

It is important to make sure that the correct work place safety procedures are in place to ensure that staff and visitors are safe in and around a business premises. The car park and walkways can often be an overlooked when considering workplace safety but as the cold weather sets in, this should be considered as employers have a duty of care for safety, in both internal and external spaces.

Ice and snow are dangerous hazards and often we are ill-equipped to deal with them. They can result in slips, trips and falls that can lead to serious injuries. Clearing away any snow and gritting surfaces is a basic requirement for winter safety, as it can help reduce accidents. Therefore, preparation for these conditions is key!

Fortunately, there are a wide variety of items available that can assist with this to make life easier and safer for everyone. Choosing the correct equipment is an important step, as you need to make sure that it is the most suitable for your purposes. So take a look at some of the options below to help you decide which is the right fit for you.

Snow Shovels

Snow shovels are much more effective than a normal spade in clearing away snow and ice. Some have reinforced blades that can be used to chip away at patches of ice, ergonomic handles for ease of use and even secondary handles to assist in the removal of large amounts of snow.

If you have a large area that needs to be cleared then a more substantial snow shovel would be more suitable, as they allow a greater volume of snow to be moved in one go without breaking under the strain. Our Heavy Duty Snow Shovel is excellent for these purposes and the secondary handle aids greatly in the lifting of large amounts of snow, allowing the user to work comfortably and safely.

De-Icing Salt

De-icing salts are particularly useful for walkways, car parks and driveways. They work by reducing the melting point of water and guard against ice formation. This means that previously hazardous, icy areas become much safer to use and reduces the likelihood of accidents. If you only have a small area that is a risk then our single de-icing salt bag is the best option. For those that have multiple premises or very large areas to be cleared then these bags can also be brought in bulk with our de-icing salt pallet, which contains 40 bags.

Grit bins

To ensure that the de-icing product remains safe from the elements and is readily available if required, it is a great option to use a grit bin. These can sometimes be very large, which is not always practical if you have either a smaller premises or are using it for domestic purposes. However, we have a range available that suit different sized spaces, so take a look at at our range of grit bins to find the most suitable size and type for you.

Salt Spreaders

If you have a large amount of ground that you need to spread de-icing-salt over then a salt spreader could be just the tool you need. You can use them to disseminate the salts, ensuring an even coverage very quickly. For larger premises the 36kg salt spreader is the most suitable and for slightly smaller premises the 30kg saltspreader is ideal.
